Mathien sounds best
in the winter.
His newest album,
C.A.L.M.,
was released back
in December.
Some of the songs
are familiar
(“Sheep”, “Twice”),
but a heap of these
are new.
It's a nice assortment
of rock, from acoustic
ballads to drive-in theatre
bubblegum pop
to garage rock
to blues and soul.
Mathien does it all.
“I think I'm gonna
kill myself”
is a stripped down
and impressive number,
full of multiple harmonies
and simple percussion,
with organs and guitars
quietly arriving.
